Player Biography
Though the power-hitting second baseman was overshadowed by his New York Yankees teammates, Tony “Poosh ’em up” Lazzeri was respected for his quiet leadership skills. A key member of seven pennant-winners, he was a .300 hitter five times and drove in more than 100 runs seven times. In 1925, he belted 60 home runs and amassed 222 RBI for Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League. In 1927, Hall of Fame manager Miller Huggins said of Lazzeri: “I’ve seen a few better second basemen, but not many. He has a phenomenal pair of hands, a great throwing arm and he covers acres of ground.”
