Player Biography
Hilton Smith often found himself in the shadow of the legendary Negro leagues pitcher Satchel Paige – not because of a lack of skill, but rather Smith’s quiet, laid-back personality. “There was nobody better in this whole world [than Hilton],” declared Negro leagues legend Buck O’Neil. Smith, credited with 20 or more wins in each of 12 seasons with the Kansas City Monarchs, played in six consecutive East-West All-Star games between 1937 and 1942. He helped lead the Monarchs to seven pennants.
