According to legend, New York Giants manager John McGraw received a flippant scouting report on Paul Waner: “That little punk don’t even know how to put on a uniform.” Once McGraw saw Waner play, he fired the scout. “That little punk don’t know how to put on a uniform, but he’s removed three of my pitchers with line drives this week,” McGraw roared. Waner began his baseball career as a pitcher, but his hitting prowess assured that “Big Poison” would play ever day. During a 20-year career, Waner accumulated 3,152 hits, batted .333, won three National League batting championships and garnered the 1927 N.L. Most Valuable Player Award.
