Kenesaw Mountain Landis was elected as baseball’s first commissioner on Nov. 12, 1920. A strict disciplinarian, Landis helped restore public confidence in baseball following the scandal of the 1919 “Black Sox.” The former U.S. district judge banned eight Chicago White Sox players for life, despite their acquittal in a court of law. Landis oft utilized the “absolute power” granted him by the owners to ensure the game’s integrity.
