Satchel Paige considered Ernest “Jud” Wilson – also known as “Boojum” – one of the two toughest hitters he ever faced. Josh Gibson felt Wilson was the game’s best hitter. A squat, left-handed batter who could play anywhere in the infield, Wilson was a line-drive hitter able to reach every part of the ballpark. After starring with the Baltimore Black Sox for most of the 1920s, Wilson moved to the Homestead Grays and captained their formidable 1931 squad. After seven years with the Philadelphia Stars, Wilson returned to the Grays and helped them win numerous championships in the early-1940s.
