Joe McCarthy, the New York Yankees manager of the 1930s and early-1940s, finished his 24-year major league career with an all-time best winning percentage of .614 to go along with 2,126 wins. McCarthy’s teams won nine pennants – one with the Chicago Cubs and the rest with the Yankees, including seven World Series championships, four of them consecutively from 1936 to 1939. Six times his teams won 100 or more games in a season, never finishing out of the first division. “I don’t know where he learned all his psychology about ballplayers. He could handle almost anybody,” claimed former Yankees outfielder Tommy Henrich.
