Player Biography
Dubbed “Home Run” by Hall of Famer Josh Gibson, Willard Brown regularly batted better than .300, helping the Kansas City Monarchs win six pennants from 1937 to 1946. The slugging outfielder played in eight East-West All-Star games, lost two years to World War II Army service, and briefly played with the St. Louis Browns in the major leagues in 1947. A star in the Puerto Rican Winter League during the 1940s and 1950s, Brown captured two Triple Crowns there, twice topping .400 and earning the nickname “Ese Hombre” (That Man). He finished his career with five minor league seasons, notably bashing 35 home runs in the Texas League in 1954.
