One of the most prolific home run hitters in the Negro leagues, Norman “Turkey” Stearnes spent his summers blasting baseballs for the Detroit Stars and his winters laboring in the Motor City’s auto plants. Satchel Paige called the left-handed Stearnes “one of the greatest hitters we ever had, as good as anybody who ever played.” Stearnes generated his power with strong shoulders and an unusual, open stance. A swift centerfielder renowned for his fielding, Stearnes was regarded by “Cool Papa” Bell as “one of the best all-around ball players.”
