Player Biography
A durable right-hander, Victor Gazaway Willis finished 388 of his 471 starts – an 82-percent completion rate. During the 1902 season, he established the National League’s modern record by completing 45 games. Willis was noted for his delivery, which came from multiple angles to produce a sweeping curveball and deceptive fastball. The Boston Sunday Journal reported that “Willis has speed and the most elusive curves. His ‘drop’ is so wonderful that, if anyone hits it, it is generally considered a fluke.”
