One of the few player/lawyers in baseball history, John Montgomery Ward flashed excellent skills on the field and offered expert legal advice off the diamond. The only player in major league history to total more than 2,000 hits (2,151) and 150 pitching wins (164), Ward was an active leader in the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players. He helped drive the formation of the Players’ League and openly criticized the reserve clause. According to the New York Journal, “New York fans considered (Ward) the most dashing, daring and winning player in a pinch the club ever had.”
