Player Biography
“Smokey” Joe Williams dominated African-American baseball in the early-20th century with a smooth motion that allowed the right-hander to mask a devastating fastball. Negro leagues executive Frank Leland said, “If you have ever witnessed the speed of a pebble in a storm, you have not even seen the speed possessed by this wonderful Texan giant. (Williams) is king of all pitchers hailing from the Lone Star State and you have but to see him once to exclaim, ‘That’s a plenty.’” In 1952, Williams was named the greatest pitcher in Negro leagues history by the Pittsburgh Courier.
