Player Biography
Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella, who was mentored by James “Biz” Mackey on the Baltimore Elite Giants, once said, “Biz Mackey was the master of defense of all catchers.” In a 1954 Pittsburgh Courier poll, Mackey was voted the top Negro leagues catcher, ahead of Josh Gibson. Mackey’s career stretched from 1918 to 1947, nearly half the time as a player-manager. He thrived in Philadelphia, where he led the Hilldales to the 1925 Colored World Series championship. A line-drive hitter and five-time East-West All-Star, Mackey was a team leader – both behind the plate and as a manager with Baltimore and Newark.
