Player Biography
“Big Sam” Thompson was indeed large for his time at 6-foot-2 and more than 200 pounds. An outstanding slugger for the National League clubs in Detroit and Philadelphia during the 19th century, the left-handed Thompson hit .336 lifetime, twice topping the .400 mark. His 126 home runs ranked second only to Roger Connor before Babe Ruth’s emergence. Harry Wright called Thompson “the hardest hitter who ever lived.” He was also a fine fielder with an exceptional arm, whose long throws from right field left observers in awe.
