Player Biography
Ned Hanlon was a smart and influential manager, winning five pennants in seven years from 1894 to 1900. A fine major league outfielder for 13 seasons, Hanlon was respected for his base running and leadership as a player. Hanlon’s teams in Baltimore and Brooklyn perfected rough, aggressive “inside baseball,” favoring bunts, base stealing and defense. Some of Hanlon’s players, including Hughie Jennings, Wilbert Robinson and John McGraw became successful managers. Connie Mack once stated, “I always rated Ned Hanlon as the greatest leader baseball ever had. I don’t believe any man lived who knew as much baseball as he did.”
