During baseball's early years in the mid 1800's the "lemon peel" baseball was a commonly used design. It featured a cover fashioned from a single piece of leather that was wrapped around a core with four rows of stitching creating a distinctive X-pattern on the ball. The baseballs were both smaller and softer than the modern baseball, quite possibly as an accomodation of the rule at the time which allowed fielders to record an out by hitting a base runner with the ball. This reproduction is based on the original "lemon peel" design from the era, and is made with genuine full-grain leather and hand-stitched with waxed linen thread.
