Player Biography
With 2,703 career hits and 1,602 managerial wins, Fred Clarke excelled both on the field and in the dugout. In his first big league game he went 5-for-5 on his way to fashioning a career .315 batting average, topping .300 in 11 seasons. In 1903, he led the league in doubles and slugging average while piloting the Pittsburgh Pirates to an appearance in the first modern World Series. A full-time player-manager in 15 of his 19 seasons at the helm, Clarke led his clubs to four first-place finishes.
