Player Biography
Burleigh Grimes, known as “Old Stubble-beard” because he didn’t shave on days he pitched, won the most games (190) of any pitcher in the 1920s. When he retired – as the last legal spitball pitcher – Grimes had won 270 games, pitched in four World Series and was the winning pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game Seven of the 1931 Fall Classic. Tough as nails, he once hit six batters in two innings and was accused of throwing at a man on deck. Frankie Frisch said, “The only time I was ever scared in my life was one time when Burleigh threw at me on a 3-and-0 count.”
