The front cover has an illustration of the Centennial Patch that was on all the Major League Baseball uniforms and it says, “Cooperstown ‘Birthplace of Baseball’”. The brochure has the history of Double Day Field, Major General Abner Doubleday and talks about the Hall of Fame Museum. The Hall of Fame was established in 1936, but was dedicated in 1939. The first four classes of inductees gathered in 1939 for the first induction weekend. The players that attended that first weekend in 1939 were: Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, Eddie Collins, Connie Mack, Cy Young, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Tris Speaker, Napoleon Lajoie, and George Sisler.
1939 Baseball Centennial Official Program for old-timers game (Wagners vs. Collins) played on June 12, 1939 at Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, New York. The cover of the program features a base with a batter and baseball in the center. The program cover looks much like an American flag with baseballs replacing stars in the blue area and red and white stripes in the lower two-thirds of the program. Text on the cover is done using red, white and blue ink. The back cover features the centennial logo
One of the most notable days in our National Pastime’s revered history is when Cooperstown opened its doors to the public on June 12, 1939 to commemorate not only baseball’s 100 year centennial, but to honor the 26 Hall of Fame inductees including the 5 original 1936 members. This prestigious inaugural event was held at Doubleday field with baseball’s greatest stars and executives in attendance. The “Centennial” celebration was related to the then assumed 100 year anniversary of Abner Doubleday formalizing the official rules of baseball. While historians eventually pinpointed Alexander Cartwright as our National Pastime’s chief inventor, Abner Doubleday’s presumed influence will forever remain etched in American folklore.
