Always displaying a calm, professional demeanor, the unflappable Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 seasons – on 23 one-year contracts – winning seven National League pennants and four World Series championships, including Brooklyn’s only title in 1955. His squads won 2,040 games during his tenure. Alston was named Manager of the Year six times and won a record seven All-Star games. He helped to establish a legacy of Dodger greatness, which led many of his former players to become successful managers.
