Player Biography
Leading the Detroit Tigers to three consecutive American League pennants, Hughie Jennings was no stranger to success. As a shortstop with a propensity for being hit by pitched balls, the freckle-faced redhead helped the Baltimore Orioles to three straight National League pennants and four trips to the Temple Cup (precursor to the World Series) during the 1890s. The man from Pennsylvania coal country was noted for the perpetual grin on his face that umpire Tim Hurst claimed, “Echoes.”
