Player Biography
Eddie Plank, a stalwart member of the early-20th century Philadelphia Athletics, was one of baseball’s all-time great southpaws. He outsmarted his opponents, logging eight 20-win seasons in his 326-victory career. Plank helped the Athletics win six pennants and three World Series titles. Hall of Famer Eddie Collins said, “Plank was not the fastest, not the trickiest, and not the possessor of the most stuff; but he was just the greatest.” Another former teammate, Jack Coombs, called Plank the most remarkable left-handed pitcher he ever saw: “Never did he pitch the ball over the center of the plate unless he absolutely had to.”
