1989 Perez-Steele Celebration Series Limited Edition art postcard of Judy Johnson.  This set of cards was produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989. The set pays homage to the 1887 W.S. Kimball & Co. Champions. The vintage issue featured “Champions of Games and Sports”. The variety of sports subjects included pugilists, skaters, swimmers, wrestlers, a pool player and others. Only 4 of the 50 cards features baseball players, none are Hall of Famers. “Celebration” was created for autograph seekers. 44 of the living Hall of Fame members at that time agreed to be included in the set.

  • Each card individually serial numbered
  • Measure 3.5" x 5.5"
  • Released in 1989
  • Limited Edition of 10,000
  • Player Biography
A savvy mainstay of two of the greatest teams in Negro leagues history, the Hilldales of the 1920s and the Pittsburgh Crawfords of the 1930s, Judy Johnson “was the smartest third baseman I ever came across,” said teammate Ted Page. Jimmy Crutchfield said, “He had a great brain.” “He was a gentleman all through those years when baseball was just as rough as could be,” said Newt Allen. The contact-hitting Johnson helped the Hilldales to a trio of Eastern Colored League pennants, and later captained the legendary Crawfords.
