His quiet demeanor contradicted an awesome presence at the plate, deserving of the nickname “Killer.” “I didn’t have evil intentions, but I guess I did have power,” he explained. In 22 major league seasons, Killebrew blasted 573 home runs, including many monumental blows estimated at more than 500 feet. The 13-time All-Star was one of the first sluggers to receive intentional walks with the bases empty and captured the 1969 American League Most Valuable Player Award, leading the league with 49 home runs and 140 RBI
