James Laurie “Deacon” White forged a storied career dating back to major league baseball’s infancy in the 1870s, earning his nickname with a reputation for upstanding character and integrity. One of the early game’s top hitters, White totaled 2,067 hits in only 1,560 games, won two batting championships and ended his career with a .312 batting average. Regarded as the best catcher in the bare-handed era, White made a successful, mid-career switch to third base. In two decades of action with nine franchises, White contributed to six championship teams.
