“If I had all men I’ve ever handled and they were in their prime, and there was one game I wanted to win above all others, Albert would be my man,” said Connie Mack of Chief Bender. A stalwart of Mack’s great Philadelphia Athletics teams of the 1910s, Charles Albert “Chief” Bender led the club to five American League pennants and World Series wins in 1910, 1911 and 1913. A two-time 20-game winner, his best season was 1910, when he went 23-5, with a 1.58 ERA. Bender had a lifetime record of 212-127 with a 2.46 ERA in 16 seasons.
