Player Biography
Nicknamed “Crab” due to his sometimes cantankerous demeanor, Jesse Burkett compiled a .338 lifetime average, topping the .400 mark in 1895 and 1896. In nine consecutive years (1893-1901), he never batted below .341. Playing in more than 2,000 games during a career that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries, Burkett had 200 or more hits in six different seasons, totaling 2,850, second only to Cap Anson during that era. An adept bunter, he claimed he could have bunted for a .400 average following the rules of 19th century baseball.
