Player Biography
Known for his expertise of pitching and defense, Bill McKechnie became a highly successful manager after an 11-year playing career and was the first skipper to win pennants with three different National League clubs – the Pittsburgh Pirates (1925), St. Louis Cardinals (1928) and Cincinnati Reds (1939 and 1940). Former pitcher Johnny Vander Meer said, “He knew how to hold on to a one- or two-run lead better than any other manager.” In 1925 and 1940, “Deacon” led his clubs to World Series victories; and he was also named Manager of the Year on two separate occasions (1937 and 1940).
