Ron Santo stands among baseball’s all-time great third basemen with both his bat and his glove. In 15 big league seasons, all but one with the Cubs, the nine-time All-Star hit 342 career home runs, logged 11 years with at least 20 round-trippers, and posted four .300 seasons. Leading the league in total chances at the hot corner eight times, the smooth fielder earned five Gold Glove Awards. Santo revealed his struggle against diabetes late in his playing career, then became a devoted fundraiser for research.
