Player Biography
Charles Herbert “Red” Ruffing anchored seven New York Yankees World Series championship teams in the 1930s and early-1940s. He was a player who teammate and Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey described as “the best pitcher (I) ever caught.” Though Ruffing lost four toes on his left foot in a mining accident as a teenager, he successfully transitioned from outfielder to pitcher. A veteran of World War II, Ruffing continued his baseball career as a manager, coach and scout for a multitude of teams in organized baseball.
