Player Biography
Sam Rice could do wonderful things with a bat – like tallying 2,987 career hits. Longtime American League rival Ty Cobb said of Rice, “You couldn’t appreciate Sam Rice enough unless you played against him.” Rice’s disputed catch in the 1925 World Series saved Game Three for the Washington Senators and remains one of baseball’s most controversial plays. In a letter not to be opened until after his death, Rice wrote, in part, “I had a death grip on it. At no time did I lose possession of the ball.”
