Player Biography
Watchmaker Frank Selee was one of the most successful managers in the history of the National League. Though he lacked major league playing experience, Selee led the Boston Beaneaters to five pennants in 12 seasons. He was the architect behind the Chicago Cubs rise to prominence in the early 1900s, before illness forced him to retire prematurely. Selee, an impeccable judge of talent, was adept at handling personalities. Nineteenth-century baseball historian David Nemec described Selee as having “a flair for bending players acquired from here, there and everywhere. [He was] a master at putting together a team better than the sum of its parts.”
