A savvy mainstay of two of the greatest teams in Negro leagues history, the Hilldales of the 1920s and the Pittsburgh Crawfords of the 1930s, Judy Johnson “was the smartest third baseman I ever came across,” said teammate Ted Page. Jimmy Crutchfield said, “He had a great brain.” “He was a gentleman all through those years when baseball was just as rough as could be,” said Newt Allen.
