A fearsome hitter whose power earned him the moniker “The Beast,” Jimmie Foxx anchored an intimidating Philadelphia Athletics lineup that produced pennant winners from 1929 to 1931. The second batter in history to top 500 home runs, Foxx belted 30 or more homers in 12 consecutive seasons and drove in more than 100 runs 13 straight years, including an astounding 175 in 1938 with the Boston Red Sox. Referring to the powerful first baseman’s physique, New York Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez said, “He has muscles in his hair.” A three-time Most Valuable Player, “Double X” also took the Triple Crown in 1933.
