1989 Perez-Steele Celebration Series Limited Edition art postcard of Catfish Hunter.  This set of cards was produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989. The set pays homage to the 1887 W.S. Kimball & Co. Champions. The vintage issue featured “Champions of Games and Sports”. The variety of sports subjects included pugilists, skaters, swimmers, wrestlers, a pool player and others. Only 4 of the 50 cards features baseball players, none are Hall of Famers. “Celebration” was created for autograph seekers. 44 of the living Hall of Fame members at that time agreed to be included in the set.

  • Each card individually serial numbered
  • Measure 3.5" x 5.5"
  • Released in 1989
  • Limited Edition of 10,000
  • Player Biography
One of Charley Finley’s “bonus babies” of the mid-1960s, Jim “Catfish” Hunter showed his brilliance in a May 1968 perfect game, the first hurled in the American League in 46 years. Hunter used control as his trump card and went on to five consecutive 20-win appearances, never losing his laid-back, down-home attitude. “If I hadn’t played baseball, I wanted to be a game warden or something,” he claimed. Sadly, Hunter’s life was cut short by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same disease that felled Lou Gehrig.
