Player Biography
Buck Ewing, widely regarded as the 19th century’s best catcher and all-around player, was the first backstop elected to the Hall of Fame. Renowned for an ability to throw out runners without rising from his crouch, Ewing also excelled with the bat, topping .300 nine consecutive years. Sporting Life editor Francis Richter said Ewing was, “the greatest player of the game from the standpoint of supreme excellence in all departments: batting, catching, fielding, baserunning, throwing, and baseball brains; a player without a weakness of any kind, physical, mental or temperamental.”
