Player Biography
Ban Johnson was an ambitious, driven leader who was instrumental in catapulting the minor-league Western League into a status on par with the established National League. Renaming the loop the American League and paring it down from 11 clubs to eight, no detail was too small for the autocratic AL czar. Johnson was also a major force on the pre-commissioner, three-man National Commission. Fellow Hall of Famer Branch Rickey once opined that Johnson’s “contribution to the game is not closely equaled by any other single person or group of persons.”
