Player Biography
An imposing force on the mound, Amos Rusie found great success by combining an overpowering fastball with a hard-breaking curve. Rusie’s fastball served as a key motivator in the 1893 rule change that moved the pitcher’s mound from 50 feet to 60-feet, 6-inches from home plate. His career was cut short at 27 after he suffered an arm injury during a pick-off attempt. Rusie amassed 248 wins in his first nine major league seasons. Still under contract, he was traded in 1900 for a young Christy Mathewson, but was unable to successfully complete a comeback.
