Player Biography
Clark Griffith was a baseball pioneer his entire life. In 1901, “The Old Fox” became a player-manager for the Chicago White Sox in the new American League, leading them to the pennant. Griffith managed until 1920, when he became the Washington Senators’ principal owner after being a part-owner since 1912. Innovative with limited finances, he won three pennants, set up one of the first farm teams, hired entertainers for fans and signed many Cuban players. “He was the greatest humanitarian who ever lived, and the greatest pillar of honesty ever had,” said Bobo Newsom. “I never played for a better man.”
