Player Biography
In 1893, Buck Ewing, the finest catcher of the day, was traded for a rather ordinary and erratic young ballplayer. The deal, however, proved anything but one-sided as George Davis transformed himself into a league-leading fielder and one of the game’s greatest switch-hitters. A powerful batsman, Davis excelled for the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox for nearly two decades, carrying the underdog “Hitless Wonders” from Illinois to the title by driving in the most runs in the 1906 World Series. Also influential off the field, he and attorney John Montgomery Ward once mounted a fierce legal battle against baseball’s reserve clause.
